California Junior Scholarship Federation - 2018 - 2019 - Information and Application for 8th Grade Students
California Junior Scholarship Federation (CJSF) is a statewide organization that fosters high standards of scholarship, citizenship, and service. A membership donation of fifteen dollars ($15) is suggested to cover club expenses, awards, and transportation for field trips.
Students must reapply each semester for membership. Those students accepted into CJSF for three semesters (7th grade: 2nd semester, 8th grade: 1st and 2nd semester), meeting all requirements for grades; service; and attendance at monthly meetings will receive a golden seal, designating “honor status”, on their eighth grade promotion certificate.
Eighth grade CJSF applications are available via Google Forms (https://goo.gl/forms/chW9ClbVfIGhxmHk2).
In addition to completing the online application, please submit the CJSF donation ($15) to Ms. Dalbeck. Checks are payable to “LCHS-CJSF”. When submitting the donation, please include first and last name, as well as the 5-digit ID number on the check and/or envelope. Deadline: Friday, September 28, 2018.
Students interested in running for a CJSF office (President, Vice President, Secretary, or Treasurer) will need to complete the “Officer Application” and submit with their membership application. (https://goo.gl/forms/RRUVH127hi9ZJoUy1) Deadline: Friday, September 28, 2018.
Eighth grade students are eligible to apply for fall membership based on their 2nd semester grades from 7th grade (received in June 2018). Eighth grade students may access their report card by visiting the Aeries Portal and searching for “Report Card History”, which is located in the “Grades” drop-down menu. New eighth grade students are eligible to apply using end of year grades from the previous school. (Note: Current 7th grade students are eligible to apply in January 2019).
To apply a student needs to earn twice the number of points than courses in which they are enrolled, P.E. does not count. For example, if you are enrolled in 6 classes, you will need a total of 10 points. If you are enrolled in a zero period class (a total of 7 classes), you will need a total of 12 points. CJSF points are awarded as follows: A = 3 points, B = 1 point, C = 0 points and D/F will exclude student from membership. Likewise, a U in citizenship in any class will exclude a student from membership.
CJSF students are required to attend monthly meetings, held the first Wednesday of each month during homeroom (HR). Students will report to their HR class and will be dismissed at 12:30 PM to attend the meeting. The first meeting is on Wednesday, October 3 in the AUDITORIUM.
First semester meeting dates are: 10/3, 11/7, 12/5, and 1/9/19 (service hour log due at 1/9/19 meeting).
Service Hours and Opportunities
Students are encouraged to complete a minimum of 10 hours of community service per semester to be eligible for the Fun Day Field Trip. Sign-ups for community service opportunities (i.e. LCE Halloween Haunt, LCF Public Library Book Sale, PCY Harvest Festival, PCR Fallapalooza, etc.) will be posted at Ms. Dalbeck’s office as well as the CJSF Google Classroom. Additional ideas for completing service hours are listed on the guidelines, which will be distributed at the first meeting.
